Internship

The museum's internship progam is new as of 2025. Although a museum internship unsually involves unpaid work at a given institution, the Zymoglyphic Museum works on such a small scale that no extra help is needed. So the focus of this internship is providing encouragement and support to students and scholars who want to conduct research on the museum and its themes.

This program was launched with the help of Willamette University professor and Surrealism scholar extraordinaire, Dr. Abigail Susik. She offered students an opportunity to do a research project related to the museum, and Lilly Thies (shown above) stepped up. Lilly is a creative writing/art history undergrad at Willamette, shown above doing research in the museum's library. Lilly tackled a long-standing issue for the museum, that of being seen as a curiosity rather than a proper art project.

This museum is often considered an attraction, if not a local oddity, but my presentation—as well as the paper that accompanies it—intends to provide evidence and ideas for repositioning the Zymoglyphic Museum as part of the world of Art History.

The resulting research paper, "Collection as Creation: An Art Historical Journey through the Zymoglyphic Region," was presented to The Willamette Institute for Continued Learning. Slides are available here and the final paper may be downloaded here (PDFs)

Please contact the museum if you are interested in being part of this program!
This internship is a variation of the museum's residency program which encourages creative projects inspired by the museum, its holdings, or and/or its themes. An internship could be any museum-related project that does not fall into that category, Lilly's paper being an excellent example. We are particularly interested in hearing from someone in the museum studies field. While geared to academia, participation is open to anyone with a viable project idea.

Interns will have use of the museum's reference library (also shown above). Contact the museum at zymoglyphic@gmail.com if interested!
